The term Second Line refers to the people who follow the main brass band, or “First Line”, during a New Orleans parade. By dancing, singing, clapping and interacting with the musicians, the crowd becomes an active part of the performance.
The New Orleans Jazz Tradition
One of the best-known traditions associated with New Orleans brass bands is the jazz funeral. During the procession to the cemetery, the band traditionally plays slow marches, hymns and spirituals. On the way back, the mood changes, with more joyful marches and lively jazz rhythms celebrating life.
This contrast between solemnity and celebration is an important part of the New Orleans musical tradition and illustrates the central role that music plays in bringing communities together.

Based in Aix-en-Provence and Marseille, our New Orleans Jazz Band regularly performs throughout the Bouches-du-Rhône and the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region.
We travel regularly to Cannes, Nice, Monaco, Avignon, the Vaucluse, the Luberon and other locations throughout Provence and the French Riviera.
